BML has a vacancy for a full-time Unmanned Air Vehicle (UAV) Designer and Developer. This role requires a combination of initiative, imagination, a good technical background, hard work, documentation, perseverance and the ability to work well and communicate with colleagues.
This post has been created as a result of an expansion in BML UAV Research and Development activities, as well as the need to develop and manufacture innovative and cost-effective UAVs in the UK for our customers. The successful applicant will work in a small team at the BML R&D Centre for customers, including the UK Ministry of Defence, and on Private Venture funded activities.
Responsibilities
- Come up with imaginative concepts for innovative UAVs with useful civilian and military capabilities.
- Assume responsibility for the design and development of novel UAVs, initially small-scale versions, to test the validity of the concept.
- Be familiar with the use of 3D Computer Aided Design to design a prototype UAV.
- Have a good background in applied mathematics, including UAV flight control theory, to understand, and if need be, to enhance, existing UAV autopilot software for use in the control of a novel UAV.
- Create and review UAV related documentation, such as Project Progress Reports, prototype UAV specifications, UAV safety related issues, and so on…
- Interact with customers and potential customers, anywhere in the UK and occasionally abroad.
Selection Criteria - essential
- Must have a good degree in Aerospace Engineering from a reputable University.
- Must be a British National (since we perform work for the UK MOD).
- Must have a driving licence.
- Must be prepared to work full time at our R&D Centre in Newnham, near Stevenage, and also out in the field when carrying out UAV testing or demonstrations.
- Must have a strong interest in UAV design and development.
- Must be comfortable with working on projects for the UK MOD.
- Must be able to work on a wide variety of projects without supervision.
- Ability to work effectively under pressure within a small team to meet a deadline.
- Ability to write and maintain technical documentation.
Selection criteria - desirable
- Experience using 3D CAD.
- Experience in the design (however rudimentary) of UAVs.
- Experience with a UAV autopilot system (ArduPilot in particular).
- Workshop experience - familiarity with the hand tools and composite materials used in the construction of a prototype UAV.
- Interest in flying a UAV.
Salary: £40,000 to £50,000
